What is a Smart Tan?

Now you can get a great, deep tan without the risk of skin damage. Using only organic, FDA-approved ingredients, Skin Sense offers an affordable and safe way to keep your tan year round.


The active ingredient in our smart spray tan is a sugar molecule extracted from sugarcane, called DHA (dihydroxyacetone). DHA reacts harmlessly with the amino acids in your epidermal cells - the outermost layer of dead skin cells - creating a tanning reaction that looks and feels natural. (DHA may react in a similar way with animal products such as wool, leather or silk. Be sure to dry completely prior to your spray tan application.)

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, more than one million people visit tanning salons everyday in the United States. Last year a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found those who visited tanning salons one or more times a month increased their risk of getting the deadly skin cancer, melanoma, by 55%.


Risk is even higher for woman who start tanning in their 20s. For those, the risk of melanoma increases 150%.


In 2002, 88,000 people were diagnosed with melanoma. That same year, 7,400 deaths were reported due to the disease, according to the Academy. According to a study, the rate of skin cancer has tripled since the 1950s.

Smart Tan Tips

  • Before your Smart Tan application, shower or bathe and exfoliate your skin.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes to and from your tanning session.
  • Avoid strenuous activities up to 8 hours following your session.
  • Excessive perspiration may cause your skin to turn yellow.
  • Once your tan has set, there is no need for concern.
  • Smart Tan does not contain sunscreen. Be sure you use sunscreen whenever you are exposed to the sun.
  • If you wear a garment during your application, you will have tan lines (be sure to wash the garment the same day to avoid staining).
  • DHA may stain wool, leather or silk. Avoid wearing these materials to your application or immediately after your tan sets.

  • How does it work?

    First, your skin is prepped with a cleaning spritzing solution. Once you have toweled dry and any loose dead cells have been gently lifted from your skin, the Smart Tan is professionally airbrushed onto your skin. This personalized application takes 2 to 5 minutes depending on whether you prefer it dry or blow dry.


    Three hours after your application, a vibrant golden tan appears on your skin. There is no better way to get an even, healthier tan.

  • How long will it last?

    It's different for everyone and depends on your lifestyle. Your tan should last between 7 to 9 days. Long baths or showers, hot tubs or swimming pools will reduce the life of your tan.


    The darker you tan naturally, the darker your Smart Tan will be. First timers should return after 24 hours for a FREE second application. One application a week will maintain your tan for as long as you wish. Regular moisturizing will help keep your tan looking brand new.
